You Go (future) Gov: The Story Behind Deb Haaland’s Fierce Leadership

When Secretary Deb Haaland got her first job, she wasn’t in D.C. She was in a small bakery. She was fifteen years old, earning $1.95 an hour, learning the kind of discipline that sticks with you for life.
She had no idea where life would go back then or what was in store for her future and the future of our country. She just watched her kind bosses work hard every single day and realized that showing up with heart mattered more than anything.
Those lessons stayed with her. They shaped how she leads, how she listens, and how she shows up for people.
Today, Deb is running for governor of New Mexico after serving as Secretary of the Interior and being one of the first Native women to serve in Congress. She has shattered countless glass ceilings. She still cooks for her child. She’s taken up running marathons. She believes that taking care of one another can move entire communities forward.
Unlike many politicians in today’s world, she knows what it feels like to actually struggle. To choose between rent and groceries and not have a planned life laid out before her. She is able to take that lived experience and be a leader that makes a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Work hard. Care deeply. Protect what matters. And perhaps most importantly: we MUST take care of the environment and pass on a better earth than what we inherited.
